Alright, alright, listen up y’all! Gonna tell ya ’bout some places to go in New England when it’s cold as a well digger’s butt in January. You know, wintertime! Don’t need none of them fancy words, just plain talk.
So, first off, them Berkshires down in Massachusetts. Heard tell it’s pretty as a picture, even when the snow’s piled up high. Stockbridge, that’s the place they talk about. Never been myself, but my niece, she went there once. Said it was like livin’ in a Christmas card. All them old houses and such, covered in snow. Sounds real nice, if you ain’t gotta shovel it!
- Plenty of snow, mind you. They get a whole heap of it in them parts. Sixty to a hundred and twenty inches, they say. That’s a lot of shovelin’, let me tell ya. My back would be achin’ just thinkin’ ’bout it.
- But, if you like the snow, and you ain’t gotta shovel it yourself, then it might be just the ticket. They got them fancy ski places too, I hear. Where them rich folks go to slide down hills. Me? I’d rather sit by the fire with a cup of hot cocoa.
Now, some folks, they like to go south when it gets cold. Can’t blame ’em. My arthritis starts actin’ up somethin’ fierce when the weather turns. They go to places like San Diego, out in California. Warm as toast, they say. Or Sedona, in Arizona. Pretty rocks, I hear. And Key West, down in Florida. That’s where all the fishermen go, I reckon.
But if you’re stickin’ around New England, there’s still plenty to do, even when it’s freezin’ your ears off.
You could go to Boston. Big city, lots goin’ on. They got museums and shops and all sorts of things to see. My grandson, he went there last winter. Said it was real pretty with all the Christmas lights. But he also said it was crowded as a hen house. And expensive! Lord, them city folks sure do like to charge a pretty penny for everything.
Then there’s Vermont. That’s where they make all that maple syrup. You can go visit a sugar shack and see how they do it. And they got them covered bridges, too. Real picturesque, they say. But again, lots of snow. And them mountain roads can be treacherous in the winter. Gotta be careful, or you’ll end up in a ditch.
Maine, that’s another good one. Lobster! That’s what Maine is known for. You can get a fresh lobster dinner, even in the winter. And they got them lighthouses, standin’ tall against the waves. But it’s cold up there, let me tell you. Windy too. Gotta bundle up good if you’re gonna go wanderin’ around Maine in the wintertime.
New Hampshire is nice too. Mountains and lakes, real pretty. They got them ski resorts, if you’re into that sort of thing. And they got them outlet stores, where you can buy all sorts of stuff cheap. But it’s cold, same as everywhere else in New England. You ain’t gonna escape the cold, that’s for sure.
So, there you have it. A few places to go in New England in the winter. Ain’t no fancy travel guide, just plain talk from someone who’s seen a few winters in her day. Whether you like the snow or not, there’s somethin’ for everyone. Just remember to dress warm and bring your long johns! And maybe a shovel, just in case.
And if you are looking to escape the winter weather altogether, then go south like those city folks! Places like San Diego, Sedona, or Key West. But you didn’t ask about those places did you? So I won’t spend my breath talking about it. You just stick to New England! You’ll be just fine.
One more thing, before I forget. No matter where you go, be careful on them roads. Winter driving can be dangerous, especially if you ain’t used to it. Take it slow, and give yourself plenty of time to get where you’re goin’. And always, always, keep a blanket and some snacks in your car, just in case you get stuck. Better safe than sorry, that’s what I always say.
