Okay, so I’ve been messing around with my entertainment center setup, trying to get the power situation under control. It was a total mess of cords and power strips, and I was always worried about overloading something or, you know, starting a fire. Plus, it was just plain ugly.
The Mess I Started With
- TV, obviously.
- Soundbar – gotta have that good audio.
- Gaming console – for when I need to unwind.
- Streaming box – because I cut the cord years ago.
- Blu-ray player – yeah, I still have one of those.
- A bunch of charging cables for controllers and stuff.
All of this was plugged into a couple of cheap power strips, and it was just a tangled disaster behind the TV stand.

What I Did About It
First, I unplugged everything. Seriously, everything. It’s amazing how much dust collects back there when you never clean it.
Next, I got a decent surge protector. Not the cheapest one, but one with enough outlets and a good joule rating. I figured it was worth spending a little extra for some peace of mind.
Then, I started organizing the cords. I used a bunch of those little cable ties – the Velcro ones are my favorite because they’re reusable. I bundled the cords together by device, so I had one bundle for the TV, one for the soundbar, and so on.
I also mounted the surge protector to the back of the TV stand. This keeps it off the floor and makes it easier to access if I need to unplug something. I just used some heavy-duty double-sided tape, and it seems to be holding up fine.
Finally, I plugged everything back in, making sure to route the cords neatly and keep them out of sight as much as possible.
The End Result
It’s not perfect, but it’s a HUGE improvement. The cords are organized, the surge protector is hidden, and I’m not constantly tripping over wires. Plus, I feel a lot better knowing that my electronics are protected from power surges.

It was a pretty simple project, and it only took me a couple of hours, but it made a big difference in the look and feel of my living room. If you’re dealing with a similar mess of cords, I definitely recommend taking the time to do something similar.
