Okay, so today, November 5th, I’m gonna talk about whether Super Blue Liriope can really thrive here in California. I’ve been wanting to add some nice ground cover to my garden, and this one caught my eye. It’s not the same as that “Big Blue” stuff; this one’s supposed to be more vigorous and get up to 20 inches tall. Sounds pretty good, right?
So, I went ahead and ordered some online. They arrived pretty quick, like 1-3 days. Nice!
First thing I did was prep the area. From what I read, these plants like well-drained soil and a bit on the acidic side. I made sure to loosen up the soil and added some compost to give it a boost. I also checked the pH level, just to be safe.
Then came the planting part. I spaced them out about 1 foot apart, which seemed to be the recommended spacing. I hear the spicata kind spreads out, so I kept that in mind. I watered them in real good after planting, just to help them settle in.
Now, it’s been a few weeks, and I gotta say, they’re looking pretty good! The foliage is a nice blue-green, definitely darker than the Big Blue Liriope I’ve seen around.
- Growth: They’ve already grown a bit, and I can see some new shoots coming up.
- Flowers: I noticed some flowers popping up in the spring.
- Fruits: And now? After the flowers did their thing, I see some glossy, dark fruits showing up. I wasn’t expecting that, but it’s a nice bonus.
I’ve been keeping an eye on the soil moisture and watering them whenever it feels dry to the touch. So far, no signs of any problems. No weird spots on the leaves or anything like that. They seem to be handling the California sun just fine.
My Thoughts So Far
Honestly, I’m pretty happy with how the Super Blue Liriope is doing. It seems like it can handle the California climate without any issues. I guess time will tell how they do long-term, but for now, they’re adding a nice touch to my garden. If you’re in California and looking for a tough, good-looking ground cover, I’d say give this one a shot.
I’ll try to post an update in a few months to let you know how they’re holding up. Fingers crossed they keep thriving!
