Alright, so I had this little challenge the other day – keeping my 6-month-old entertained. I mean, they’re at that age where everything is fascinating, but also, nothing holds their attention for too long. So, I had to get creative.
First off, I gathered all the baby-safe toys we had. We’re talking about soft blocks, rattles, those crinkly books – the whole shebang. I spread them out on the play mat, making a colorful little wonderland. My little one was on their tummy, and I started by just showing them each toy, one by one. I made silly sounds with the rattles, and crinkled the pages of the books, trying to get a giggle.

Sensory Play is Key
- Tried a bit of sensory play. I filled up a plastic bin with some cooked pasta (cooled down, obviously). They loved squishing it between their fingers! It was messy, but hey, that’s part of the fun, right?
- Then, we moved on to some stacking cups. I showed them how to stack them up and, of course, how to knock them down. They were more interested in chewing on them, but it’s all about exploration at this age.
I also remembered reading somewhere that singing is great for babies. So, I busted out all the nursery rhymes I could remember. “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” – you name it. I even threw in some made-up songs about what we were doing. I’m no singer, but they seemed to enjoy the sounds and my silly faces.
We also spent some time just looking at picture books. I pointed at the pictures and named the objects – “dog,” “cat,” “ball.” I tried to make it interactive, asking them questions like, “Where’s the kitty?” even though they can’t answer yet. It’s all about getting them used to language and sounds.
Tummy Time Fun
Since my little one isn’t sitting up independently yet, we did a lot of this on their tummy. I made sure to put their favorite toys just within reach to encourage them to move and reach. It was like a little workout session, but way more fun!
Honestly, the key was just following their lead. When they got bored with one thing, we moved on to the next. And naps, we took plenty of naps in between. It was a full day of baby entertainment, and I think we both had a blast!
