Okay, so Mother’s Day was coming up, and I was totally blanking on what to write in my card. I mean, “Happy Mother’s Day, love you!” is fine, but it’s, like, the bare minimum, you know? I wanted something that would actually make my mom laugh.
So I started brainstorming. First, I thought about all the inside jokes we have. There’s the time she tried to make that fancy French dessert and it ended up looking like, well, let’s just say it wasn’t pretty. And then there was the “incident” with the rogue garden gnome… plenty of material there.

Then I did a little online search, just to see what other people were doing. I typed in stuff like “funny mother’s day messages” and “mother’s day jokes”.
I found some good one-liners, but nothing that really felt personal, you know? It all seemed a bit generic.
After that little search detour, I went back to thinking about my mom specifically. What makes her laugh? What are her quirks? I jotted down a few ideas:
- Her obsession with reality TV shows.
- The way she always misplaces her reading glasses.
- Her terrible singing voice (sorry, Mom!).
- The fact, she always burn the toast.
The Writing Process
I played around with a few different phrases, trying to combine the funny observations with a bit of heartfelt appreciation. It was tricky! I didn’t want to be mean, just playful. I wrote a few drafts, crossed them out, started over. It was a whole process.
Finally, I came up with something I was happy with. It was a bit silly, a bit sentimental, and definitely something that would make my mom laugh. Something like that: “Mom, thanks for putting up with me all these years, even when I tested your patience…and your cooking skills! Love you!”.
Mission accomplished! I wrote the message in the card, added a little drawing (stick figures, because my artistic skills are limited), and called it a day. Mom loved it, by the way. She laughed so hard she snorted, which is always a good sign.
