Okay, so I’ve been on a real period drama kick lately, and after re-watching Downton Abbey for, like, the fifth time, I decided I needed to find some similar shows. I mean, who doesn’t love the drama, the costumes, and the upstairs/downstairs dynamic? So, I started digging, and here’s what I did and found.
The Initial Search
I started with, you know, good ol’ Google. I just typed in “films similar to Downton Abbey” and hoped for the best. I got a bunch of articles, listicles, and forum threads. I spent a good hour just clicking through, opening tabs, and making a list.

Narrowing it Down
My list got pretty long, pretty fast. There were tons of suggestions! I decided to be a little more specific. I realized I really liked the early 20th-century setting and the whole British aristocracy thing. So, I started refining my searches, adding keywords like “Edwardian era” and “British period drama”.
Digging into Forums
I also found some great suggestions on Reddit. People were sharing their favorites and having full-on discussions about what made a show “Downton-esque”. I spent some time reading through threads and adding some promising titles to my already massive list.
Checking Availability
This is where it got a bit tricky. Some of the recommendations were for older films or shows that weren’t readily available on my usual streaming services. I had to do some hunting to see where I could actually watch these things.
I used some streaming service to search the films I found.
Making My Watchlist
Finally, I had a curated list of films and shows that seemed like they’d really scratch that Downton Abbey itch. I’ve got:
- Gosford Park: This one came up a lot, and it’s actually written by Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey. Apparently, it has a similar vibe, but with a murder mystery thrown in!
- The Remains of the Day:This movie focus on the life of a butler in a grand English house.
- A Room with a View:Okay, this one is set more in Edwardian Era, romance story.
- Howards End:focuses on social conventions and class divisions in England.
So yeah, that’s my journey to find some Downton Abbey-like goodness. I’m pretty excited to start working my way through this list. Wish me luck, and I’ll probably report back on how these shows actually stack up!
