Okay, so the other day I was bummed out because I finished watching Firefly, again. And, as usual, I was left wanting more. So I thought, “Let’s find something like Firefly to fill that void.”
First, I just straight-up Googled “tv series like firefly”. I mean, that’s the obvious first step, right? This brought up a bunch of articles and forum threads.

I started clicking through, making a list of the shows that came up most often. I jotted them down on a notepad, old-school style. I saw some familiar names, and some I’d never heard of.
My Watchlist
- Battlestar Galactica (the newer one): This one popped up a lot. People kept saying it had that same “found family” vibe and gritty, realistic feel.
- Dark Matter: I saw this mentioned as having a similar crew-on-a-ship dynamic, with some mystery and action.
- Killjoys: Apparently, this one has a fun, space-bounty-hunter thing going on, which sounded promising.
- Farscape: An older show, but it seems to have a cult following. People said it was quirky and character-driven, just like Firefly.
- The Expanse:I saw some people that it was a bit more “hard sci-fi,” but it still had that political intrigue and complex characters.
Next, I decided to do a little more digging on each show. I looked up some trailers on YouTube, read a few reviews (avoiding spoilers, of course!). I wanted to get a better sense of the tone and style of each one.
I started with “Battlestar Galactica” because it seemed like the top recommendation. I watched the miniseries that kicks it off, and… wow. Totally hooked. It’s definitely darker and more intense than Firefly, but it’s got that same feeling of a group of people struggling to survive against the odds. Plus, the characters are amazing.
So, that’s where I’m at now. I’m a few episodes into Battlestar Galactica, and I’m really enjoying it. It’s not exactly like Firefly, but it’s definitely scratching that same itch. I’ll probably check out “Dark Matter” or “Killjoys” next, once I’ve made my way through Battlestar. It’s a process, but hey, finding a good show is serious business!
