So, I’ve been seeing these “Hill House” dresses all over my feed lately, and they’re seriously dreamy. I finally caved and decided to try making one myself. I mean, who doesn’t want to feel like a Victorian ghost floating through a haunted mansion?
First things first, I needed a pattern. After scrolling through endless options online, I settled on one that looked pretty close to the vibe I was going for. It had the flowy skirt, the puffed sleeves, the whole shebang. I printed out the pattern, which was like, a million pages, and taped it all together. What a mess! But I did it!

Next up, fabric shopping. I hit up my local fabric store and wandered around like a lost puppy until I found the perfect material. I ended up choosing a light, airy cotton in a soft, off-white color. Felt very vintage, you know?
Then came the actual sewing part. Let me tell you, this was a journey. I dusted off my old sewing machine, which I haven’t used in ages, and got to work. Cutting out the fabric pieces was surprisingly therapeutic. I felt like a real fashion designer!
Sewing the dress together was a whole different story. There were definitely some frustrating moments. I messed up the sleeves, like, three times and had to rip out the seams and start over. And don’t even get me started on the zipper. I think I swore more in those few hours than I have in the past year.
But, I kept at it. I took breaks when I needed to, watched some tutorials online, and slowly but surely, the dress started to take shape. Seeing it come together was so satisfying. It was like watching a little fabric baby grow up. Okay, that’s a weird analogy, but you get the idea.
- Printed out pattern and taped together.
- Bought a light, airy cotton fabric.
- Cut out fabric pieces.
- Sewed the dress together.
- Messed up a few times but kept going.
Finally, after days of work, it was done! I tried it on, and honestly, I felt amazing. It was flowy, it was comfortable, it was exactly what I had envisioned. I even did a little twirl in front of the mirror. I felt like I should be wandering through a creepy old house, maybe holding a candlestick or something.
I was so proud of myself! I made a whole dress, from scratch! It wasn’t perfect, and there was a lot of learning, but it was an awesome experience. I might even try making another one, maybe in a different color. Or maybe I’ll just wear this one every day. Who knows?
