Okay, so I decided to try something new the other day, and I signed up for this life drawing class in Singapore. I’ve always kinda liked the idea of drawing, but honestly, I’m no Picasso.
Anyway, I found this place called the Visual Arts Centre that runs these workshops. It seemed pretty legit, so I thought, “Why not?”
- First step: I showed up, feeling a bit awkward, not gonna lie. There were easels, pencils, and a bunch of people who actually looked like they knew what they were doing. And then there was me, still trying to figure out which end of the pencil to use.
- Getting into it: The instructor, a chill dude, started talking about shapes, lines, and how to see the human body as a collection of forms. We did some warm-up exercises, just basic stuff like drawing circles and shading. Sounds easy, right? Well, it kinda is.
- Then came the real deal: The model. Drawing a real person, live, is way different from doodling in your notebook. It was pretty challenging, not gonna lie. Trying to capture the pose, the way the light hit the skin, the whole vibe – it was a lot.
- Focusing on bits and pieces: The instructor suggested we focus on one area at a time, like just the head or the curve of the back. He said something about studying anatomy, which made sense.
- Practice, practice, practice: I’m not saying I became a master in one session, far from it. But I did learn some new techniques and gained a new appreciation for how complex the human body is.
Looking back: It was a cool experience. I didn’t magically become a great artist overnight, but I felt like I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and learned something new.
I went home, watched some free drawing tutorials online, and even found some free resources from the library. Gotta keep practicing, you know?
If you’re looking for something different to do in Singapore, I’d say give it a shot. It’s definitely a challenge, but a good one. Who knows, you might even surprise yourself.
I’ll probably do this again, It’s a fun experience and I did have a great time on that day.
