So, today I tried something a little different. I’ve been seeing these “wife life” sweatshirts all over the internet, and they kind of cracked me up. I thought, “Why not try to make my own?” It seemed like a fun little project, and honestly, I could use a new comfy sweatshirt.
First, I dug through my closet and found an old, plain purple sweatshirt that was still in pretty good shape. It’s a little big on me, but that’s perfect for a cozy sweatshirt. I washed and dried it, just to make sure it was clean and ready to go.

Next, I needed to figure out what I wanted it to say. “Wife Life” was the obvious choice, but I also saw some with “Spoiled Wife Life” and “Happy Wife, Happy Life”. I even saw some with custom dates on them, like for anniversaries. Pretty cool, right? Ultimately, I decided to keep it simple and just go with “Wife Life” in a sort of distressed, vintage-looking font.
Now, I’m no artist, so I hopped online and found a few fonts I liked. I played around with them in a word document, just to get the sizing and spacing right. Once I was happy with it, I printed it out. This was going to be my template.
Then came the slightly tricky part. I grabbed some fabric paint from my craft box – I went with white, to contrast with the purple. I carefully placed the printed template under the front of the sweatshirt and used a pencil to lightly trace the letters onto the fabric. It was a little faint, but it was enough to give me a guide.
After that, it was just a matter of painting! I took my time and carefully filled in the letters with the fabric paint. It was actually kind of relaxing. I did a couple of coats, just to make sure the letters were nice and bold. It is not a difficult job, just need to be patient.
- Find a sweatshirt you like.
- Choose your design.
- Print a template.
- Trace the design onto the sweatshirt.
- Paint the design.
Once the paint was dry, I followed the instructions on the paint bottle to heat-set it. This usually involves ironing the design for a few minutes, or sometimes putting it in the dryer. And that was it! My very own, custom-made “Wife Life” sweatshirt.
I have to say, I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out. It’s not perfect, but it’s got that handmade charm, you know? Plus, it’s super comfy, and it makes me smile every time I put it on. I might even make a few more, maybe with different colors and designs. It’s a fun and easy way to add a little personality to your wardrobe, and it would make a great gift, too!
