Today, I decided to tackle a project I’ve been putting off for a while – organizing my shoe collection. It’s gotten a bit out of hand, and honestly, it was like a cargo ship had exploded in my closet. So, I’m calling this mission “Shoes Cargo.”
Step 1: The Great Excavation
First, I pulled everything out. Every single pair of shoes, boots, sandals, slippers – you name it. I dumped them all onto my living room floor. It was a mountain of leather, rubber, and regret (mostly about the impulse purchases).

Step 2: The Sorting Ceremony
Next, I started sorting. I made piles: “Keep,” “Donate,” “Maybe,” and “What Was I Thinking?” The “Maybe” pile was surprisingly large. I’m indecisive, okay?
- Keep: My everyday favorites, the ones I wear constantly.
- Donate: Shoes in good condition that I just don’t wear anymore. Someone else can enjoy them!
- Maybe: The ones I’m emotionally attached to, but haven’t worn in ages.
- What Was I Thinking?: Those impulse buys that looked great in the store, but never saw the light of day.
Step 3: Tough Decisions (and Maybe Tears)
This was the hard part. I forced myself to be ruthless with the “Maybe” pile. I tried on each pair, walked around, and asked myself, “Will I really wear these?” If the answer was no (or a hesitant maybe), they went into the “Donate” pile. It was painful, but necessary.
Step 4: Cleaning and Polishing
Before putting anything back,I take out the cleaning kit,Cleaned the shoes that need to be cleaned, I mean, I can’t just put them in the box dirty, I did a great job!
Step 5: Containerizing the Chaos
I invested in some clear plastic shoe boxes. This is key! I needed to be able to see what’s inside without having to unpack everything. I carefully placed each pair of “Keep” shoes into its own box.
Step 6: The Tetris Effect
Finally, I started putting the boxes back into my closet. It was like a game of Tetris, trying to maximize space and make everything fit. I arranged them by type – boots together, sneakers together, etc. – so it’s easy to find what I’m looking for.
And that’s it! My “Shoes Cargo” operation was a success. My closet is organized, I can actually see my shoes, and I’ve freed up some space. Plus, I’m donating a bunch of shoes to a good cause. Win-win!
