Alright, listen up! Gotta tell ya ’bout takin’ yer boy, that teenage fella of yours, on a trip. Yeah, a real trip, not just to the store for milk. Boys, they need somethin’ special, somethin’ to remember when they’re all grown up and forgettin’ where they put their teeth.
First off, parks. Don’t go rollin’ yer eyes at me! Parks ain’t just for little kids and pigeons. Big ones, with mountains and stuff, like that Shenan… Shenan… well, that big one with the long name. They got trails, ya know? Walkin’ trails. Get yer boy off that couch and hike a bit. Show ‘im trees bigger than yer house and rocks that been there since before yer grandma was born. Makes ’em think, that does. Makes ’em realize there’s more to life than stare-in’ at that tiny screen.

- Walkin’ – good for the legs.
- Air – fresh, not like the stuff in yer basement.
- Seein’ stuff – birds, squirrels, maybe even a bear if you’re lucky (or unlucky, depends on how fast ya run).
Now, if yer boy’s the excitable type, always jumpin’ around like a frog in a hot pan, take him to one of them places with the roller coasters. Big metal things, go up real high, then come down real fast. Scares the bejeebers outta me, but the kids, they love it. Screamin’ and hollerin’, feelin’ like they’re flyin’. Just make sure he ain’t eatin’ cotton candy right before, trust me on that one.
And then there’s fishin’. Now, I know what yer thinkin’. Fishin’? Boring! But it ain’t, not if you do it right. Take him somewhere special, like that Alaska place, where the fish are bigger than yer dog. Get on a boat, feel the water splashin’, the sun on yer face. And when that boy pulls in a fish, bigger than his arm, the look on his face… well, it’s worth more than all the gold in Fort Knox.
But it ain’t just about the place, see? It’s about spendin’ time together. Talkin’. Laughin’. Maybe even learnin’ somethin’ new from each other. Too many folks these days, they’re always busy, always rushin’. Forget to slow down, forget to just be with their kids. Time goes by fast, faster than a chicken chasin’ a June bug. Before ya know it, that boy’s all grown up and gone. So take the trip. Make the memories. Don’t wait.
And don’t forget the food! Boys, they’re always hungry, like bottomless pits. Pack plenty of snacks, sandwiches, whatever he likes. Don’t wanna hear no whinin’ about bein’ hungry in the middle of nowhere. And make sure ya got plenty of water too, stayin’ hydrated is important, even if it means more bathroom breaks.
Oh, and one more thing. Put yer phone away! Yeah, I see you lookin’ at it. Pay attention to yer boy, not that silly little box. He’s more important than any email or tweet or whatever it is you’re lookin’ at. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
So there ya have it. Some ideas for takin’ yer teenage son on a trip. Get out there, have some fun, make some memories. Life’s too short to be sittin’ around doin’ nothin’. Now go on, get packin’!
