Okay, let’s get started. I always wanted a cute little bag to keep my makeup stuff in, but the ones in the stores were either too pricey or just not my style. So, I thought, why not make one myself? I mean, how hard could it be, right? Turns out, it’s totally doable, and I’m here to share how I did it.
First things first, I had to get my materials together. I went to a fabric store and picked out some nice cotton fabric for the outside of the bag and some waterproof stuff for the inside, you know, just in case something spills. And of course, I needed a zipper. I went with a 9-inch one because I wanted a medium-sized bag. Also, I grabbed some thread that matched my fabric, a pair of scissors, some pins, and I used my grandma’s old sewing machine.
Let’s Start
I started by cutting the fabric. For the outside, I cut two pieces, each 10×7 inches, and the same for the lining. Then, it was time to tackle the zipper. I placed one of the outer fabric pieces right side up, laid the zipper face down along the top edge, and then put the lining piece right side down on top of that. It was like making a zipper sandwich. I pinned it all together and sewed along the edge, as close to the zipper as I could get without hitting it.
After that, I did the same thing with the other side of the zipper and the remaining fabric pieces. When I opened it up, it looked like the beginnings of a bag, which was pretty cool to see. I then top-stitched along each side of the zipper to make it look neat and keep the fabric from getting caught when I open and close it.
Next, I unzipped the zipper about halfway – this is super important, or you won’t be able to turn the bag right side out later. I folded the bag so that the two outer pieces were facing each other and the two lining pieces were facing each other. I pinned all around the edges, leaving a small opening at the bottom of the lining part to turn the bag through later.
Sew and Turn Around
I sewed around the edges, making sure to leave that opening in the lining. Then, to give the bag some shape, I boxed the corners. I flattened out each corner, making a triangle, and measured about an inch from the point, drawing a line across. I sewed along that line, did a backstitch, and cut off the excess fabric. This made the bottom of the bag flat.
Finally, I turned the bag right side out through the opening I left in the lining. It was a bit like giving birth, but to a bag. Once it was out, I stitched up the opening in the lining, tucked it into the bag, and that was it! I had a fully functional, super cute cosmetic bag.
I’m not gonna lie, it felt pretty awesome to make something with my own hands that I could actually use. Plus, I got to choose the exact fabric I wanted, so it was totally unique. If you’re thinking about trying it, I say go for it. It’s a fun project, and you end up with something practical and personalized. Just take it step by step, and don’t be afraid to mess up a little. That’s how you learn, right?
- Tips:
- You can use a makeup bag with compartments or pockets.
- If your bag doesn’t have compartments, you can use some small makeup organizers.
