Okay, so I’ve been itching for a getaway, but, you know, life. Money’s tight, and taking tons of time off work just isn’t happening. Enter the “staycation” idea! I decided to explore Long Island, since I am living in NY, and, honestly, it’s practically a whole different world out here.
The Planning Phase (aka Avoiding Disaster)
First, I picked a long weekend. Three days felt like enough to unwind without breaking the bank or using up all my vacation days. Then came the fun part – figuring out where to go and what to do. I didn’t want the usual tourist traps. I was aiming for that “local hidden gem” vibe.

- Started Googling like a maniac. “Long Island staycation ideas,” “Long Island hidden gems,” “best Long Island towns” – you name it, I searched it.
- Checked out a few local blogs .Those were goldmines for off-the-beaten-path suggestions.
- Made a list of potential towns and attractions. I wanted a mix of beach time, nature walks, and maybe some cute little shops.
The Itinerary (Subject to Change, Obviously)
I decided to base myself in a little town called Northport. It looked adorable, had some good reviews, and was somewhat centrally located. Here’s how the rough plan shook out:
- Day 1: Drive out to Northport, settle into my Airbnb (a cute little cottage I found!), and explore the town. Maybe grab dinner at a local seafood place.
- Day 2: Head east to the Hamptons, but not the super fancy part. I was thinking more Montauk – lighthouse, beaches, maybe a hike.
- Day 3: Head the other direction, Sunken Meadow State Park. I did the boardwalk, and some more beach time, then the drive back home.
The Actual Staycation (Things Get Real)
The drive out to Northport was smooth. My little cottage was even cuter in person. I unpacked, changed into comfy clothes, and went for a walk. I stumbled upon a little harbor, watched the sunset, and grabbed some amazing fish tacos at a place called “The Salty Shack”.
Day two was Montauk day. The drive was longer than I anticipated, but beautiful. I hiked around the Montauk Point Lighthouse, took a million pictures. I found a secluded beach. It was breezy, a little chilly, but totally worth it.
Sunken Meadow State Park on day three was the perfect way to end things. The boardwalk was awesome, and it was so very relaxing. By the time I got back in my car to head home, and I felt refreshed. I have already been back home in my place.
The Verdict
Honestly, it was way better than I expected! I saved money, didn’t have to deal with airport stress. It was just what I needed. I’m already planning my next Long Island staycation – maybe exploring the North Fork wineries next time!
