Okay, so I’ve been seeing these clear handbags everywhere lately, and I finally decided to take the plunge and make my own. Designer ones can be, like, ridiculously expensive, so I figured, why not try a DIY version? Plus, I wanted to add my own little twist to it.
Getting Started
First things first, I needed to gather my supplies. This was actually pretty easy. I hit up my local craft store and grabbed:

- A clear vinyl sheet. Make sure it’s thick enough to hold its shape! I learned that the hard way. My first try was way too flimsy.
- Some sturdy fabric for the trim and handles. I went with a bold, patterned fabric because, well, I like to be extra.
- Heavy-duty thread. Don’t skimp on this! You need something that can handle the vinyl.
- Snaps or a zipper. For closing the bag, you know.
- Basic sewing supplies: scissors, pins, a ruler, a sewing machine (though you could hand-sew if you’re patient!).
The Messy (But Fun) Part
I started by cutting out the vinyl. I just went for a simple rectangle shape, figuring I could always trim it down later. It’s way easier to make it smaller than to make it bigger, am I right?
Then came the scary part – sewing the vinyl! It’s definitely trickier than regular fabric. It can slip and slide all over the place. My biggest tip? Go slow! And use lots of pins. Seriously, pin the heck out of it.
After I sewed the main body of the bag together (which, I’ll admit, took a couple of tries to get right), I attached the fabric trim. This was way easier, thank goodness. I just folded the fabric over the edges of the vinyl and sewed it down. It gave it a nice, finished look and also helped reinforce the seams.
Next up: handles! I cut long strips of the same fabric, folded them in half, and sewed them together. Then I attached them to the top of the bag. This was another slightly tricky part, making sure they were evenly spaced and securely attached. Double-stitched those suckers for extra security.
Finishing Touches
Finally, I added the snaps. I decided on snaps instead of a zipper because I thought it would be easier (and it was!). I just carefully marked where I wanted them and used my awl (carefully, because, pointy) to make holes, and Hammered the button, and that’s it.
And… that’s it! My very own, totally unique, clear handbag. It’s not perfect, for sure. There are a few wonky seams, and I definitely learned some things along the way. But overall, I’m super happy with how it turned out! It’s surprisingly sturdy, and I’ve gotten tons of compliments on it. Best of all, it cost me way less than a designer one, and I had fun making it. Win-win!
